WEEL 1: STRATEGIC PLANNING ASSIGNMENT DRAFT

 WEEK 1: STRATEGIC PLANNING ASSIGNMENT

Basic Draft Concept

Nike is an American multinational corporation that specializes in the designing, manufacturing and marketing of footwear, apparel, sporting goods and equipment all around the world. They were founded in 1964, under the name of Blue Ribbon Sports, Inc, util the name was officially changed to Nike in 1971. Recognized worldwide, Nike operates in more than 120 countries and as of May 31, 2022, they operate a total of 1046 retail stores worldwide. Nike boasts the largest revenue in its industry of sporting goods with more than a reported $37.4B reported in 2020. Its closest competitor, Adidas, could only manage $11.15B.

Although a recent scandal in 2021 which involved the distribution of “Lil Nas X satan shoes”, caused a dent in the brands reputation, the brand immediately confirmed that they were not involved in the creation and distribution of the shoes and filed a trademark lawsuit against its promoters, “MSCHF” in order to prevent the promotion and distribution of the shoes. Despite this and a number of other controversies including carbon footprint and toxic chemicals, Nike’s revenue sales over the years has consistently increased (excluding the pandemic year), and they have proved to be one of the most important brands in sporting goods.

Although Nike is not an enterprise that comes to mind first when relating with the topic of social change, I decided to go with Nike because of what they outlined to be their Corporate Social Responsibility. Nike has always portrayed itself as an enterprise which seeks to defy human limits and they do this through 3 key areas which include, diversity and inclusion, community development and environmental sustainability.

In this project I would also be hoping to cover how Nike tackles the challenges that come with a for profit business hoping to create large social changes through their Corporate Social Responsibility,
